'Here human beings pass as glimmers and a glimpse of everything is had through the transparent atmosphere... everything is illuminated and quivers under waves of light propagated in space', wrote Gustave Geoffrey of Monet painting of his wife and son.

Their faces are not rendered in detail, emphasizing the fleeting nature of Monet's 'impression' of the scene. It was painted in his tranquil period at Argenteuil from 1872 to 1875 and bears close comparison with works by Renoir from the same period.

The enhanced colour of the red poppies against a green background derives from the fact that they are complementary colours, but it is more likely that Monet painted this instinctively rather than as a result of his study of colour laws."
